Correct Use of Eye Drops

Correct Use of Eye Drops

Dosage Forms of Eye Medications:
Eye medications are available in the form of drops, ointments, and tablets, with eye drops being the most common form.

An eye drop is a sterile liquid medication in the form of a solution or suspension used to treat eye conditions.

Important Points:

  • Use medications correctly. Ensure you know the medication’s name and the required frequency of use.
  • If you experience any discomfort while using the medication, immediately contact your ophthalmologist. Remember your drug allergies and report any allergic symptoms, such as itching, swelling, or the appearance of red spots, to your ophthalmologist.

How to Use Eye Drops:

  1. First, wash your hands.
  2. Be careful not to touch the tip of the dropper.
  3. Look upwards.
  4. Gently pull the lower eyelid down to create a small pocket between the eyelid and the eye.
  5. As much as possible, bring the dropper close to this pocket, but ensure the tip of the dropper does not touch your eye.
  6. Look up and gently drop one drop into your eye (the eye can hold only one drop).
  7. Keep your eyes closed for two minutes, ensuring not to squeeze your eyes too tightly.
  8. Gently wipe away any excess liquid from around your eye with a tissue.
  9. If more than one type of eye drop has been prescribed, wait at least 5-10 minutes between using different drops. Always try to use artificial tears as the last drop.
  10. Eye drops may cause a burning sensation in the eye, but this should not last more than a few minutes. If it lasts longer, consult your doctor or pharmacist.
  11. Some eye drops are emulsions and should be shaken before use, such as Prednisolone or Fluorometholone eye drops.

Very Important Note:
Eye drops and ointments should be discarded one month after opening. If the tip of the dropper or the ointment tube comes into contact with anything, discard it immediately to prevent infection.

How to Use Eye Ointment:

  1. First, wash your hands.
  2. Be careful not to let the tip of the tube touch anything.
  3. Tilt your head slightly backward.
  4. Hold the tube with one hand and use the other hand to pull down the lower eyelid, creating a small pocket between the eyelid and the eyeball.
  5. Bring the tip of the tube as close as possible to this pocket.
  6. Apply the necessary amount of ointment from the inner corner of the eye to the outer corner.
  7. Close your eyes for two minutes.
  8. Use a tissue to clean any excess ointment around the eye.
  9. Gently close the tube without letting it touch your hands.
